As the fall season arrives and the children return to school, it’s always good to survey what God has done during the summer months.

The Ministry Center will provide a home in the Roma village for us, a place to house and train missionaries to the Roma, and a location embedded in the Roma village from which to minister to the community and host a church fellowship.

The Ministry Center will consist of two buildings, the larger main building and the smaller “cottage.” We are currently raising funds (about $41,000 to go!) to build the cottage, which will allow us to live and minister in the Roma village. Violeta, who is from Sisak, Croatia, and Rebekah both have a heart for the Roma of Capraške Poljane, located just outside of Sisak.

We were also blessed to work with Vedrana again this summer. Vedrana grew up around Roma ministries and has a deep desire for the Roma to know the love of Christ.

Please pray that the Lord will continue to raise up workers and provide finances to pay nationals who wish to work full time!

During that time, we felt the Lord moving as the ministry and the openness grew. This year, because we had Rebekah and Violeta with us all summer, we kicked off a special four weeks of Mladice Bible Clubs in Capraške Poljane. Over those four clubs we focused on the life and ministry of Jesus. It was a great success, although a bit chaotic, and really helped to prepare the kids for the Mladice Carnival, which we had soon after the last club.

For the first three days we had biblical skits, crafts, and songs. This was followed by a day of fun and games.

We were grateful to have a team from Master’s Community Church in Kansas City to help with the Carnival. Since many of them served in Mladice Carnivals in Capraške Poljane in previous years, it was really wonderful to see them continue their relationships by loving the children! When people return multiple times to minister to a village, it makes a big impact on the kids. This year, we were also able to go to a nearby smaller village Palanjek to have a one day mini-carnival! This was our second year of ministries in Palanjek.

Please pray that the Lord would raise up more workers in Capraške Poljane and Palanjek!

This was the second year we had a camp, but our first year of busing teens to a remote location. We hosted about 30 teens from the Roma villages of Slavonski Brod and Darda in the city of Orahovica. We were joined by Margaret, Lenna, and Abigayl from the USA; Đeno, Biljana and family from the EPC church in Darda; and the Price family from Slavonski Brod.

The primary goal of the Klema Teen Camp is to encourage youth to think about and make spiritual decisions as they very quickly approach adulthood. Secondarily, we desire to provide an opportunity for the Roma youth to connect, in the name of Christ, across their distributed and isolated communities.

Please pray that a church would “adopt” this very important yearly ministry and support it by sending regular teams!

This is especially true for Lim and Željka. Because of a generous gift from the USA and the endurance of Lim, Željka, and Pam, we held our annual 5-day “mini” preschool. We are very thankful for the Slavonski Brod Baptist Church for, once again, hosting our preschool.

Roma children have special challenges when they enter the public school system. Our mini-preschool tries to prepare the children for the structure and methodologies the kids will encounter when they start school. We very much desire this program to expand, especially after our Ministry Center is realized.

Please pray that we may one day have a “full” preschool for the children!

The word that can best describe that event from a long time ago is “chaos” that our beautiful Lord was shaping year by year into His order.

This year we had our 7th VBS (now called a Mladice Carnival) in Slavonski Brod. The Carnival lasted for three days. We had a Bible program for two days and the third day was only games.

Through the years of working in the Roma villages, and in our personal Christian lives, we see and constantly relearn how important it is to love and to forgive. These were exactly the two topics we presented to the children attending our Carnival. Through Jesus’ parables, the “Unforgiving servant” (Mt 18) and the “Good Samaritan” (Lk 10), in the most realistic way possible, we tried to teach the children what Jesus taught his disciples and a multitude of other people.

Every day, after songs and a biblical skit, we divided the children into the groups. While in their group, children talked with leaders about the meaning and application of the biblical skit. Afterward, they worked on a craft and coloring book that was connected to the biblical message of the skit.

This year we had one little addition in our program. It was a skit about the fight between good and evil, between Super Andy and his partner, Super Kokoš, and Evil Andry. Through these humorous skits, children could see how good prevails against evil!

The third day of the Carnival was for games. The children especially love games, but for them, it is more important to jump and run, and most of the time their focus is on individual success. Our games are group based games led by leaders so that the children must win through cooperative efforts. Children really played hard, but in the end, just one group won. But, in the end, no matter who won all the children got candy!

It was a blessing to see the children listen and participate in the program even though it was very hot outside. It was a blessing to see some of our teens, who just two days before had attended our camp in Orahovica, came and helped. It was a blessing to see that children do not climb or jump on our cars when we leave the village every day (only the last day). It was a blessing that the Carnival program went on in the peace and harmony. It was a blessing that we could have this Carnival in Brod.

Thank you to all the helpers for the 2018 Mladice Carnival! You made it possible to have the Carnival and to bless the children of Slavonski Brod!

For those of you who are reading this letter and do not know me, my name is Violeta, from Petrinja and I’m 23 years old. This is letter about God’s grace in my life and about something that He can do, and according to the Scriptures and He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Since I was young, in the church where I grew up and other churches in different areas, I watched people who were serving God, people who used what God had given them. When I became a Christian, at the age of 14, I was asked to join people who worked with kids in church. Of course, I said yes. At that time, I thought ministry was something that can be done only in church, like worship, pastor’s ministry, ministry to kids, youth, sisters in Church…but I never imagined how widely that can be. I loved working with kids, going to the camps, that wasn’t a problem to me, but deep inside I thought maybe this is something that I “took” for myself. As time was passing I started asking God to show me what should I do next, I didn’t understand why all of a sudden, I felt turmoil and dissatisfaction. As I didn’t receive any answer from God I was convinced that God had nothing for me and that I don’t need to expect or ask anymore.

I had no idea if what the article was saying was true or not, but I read that people were not treating the Roma kids in the same way as other kids I didn’t have any contact with Roma. We didn’t have Roma people in my school, and I would only see them occasionally on a bike going through the city. I had no idea where they lived or anything. That day I thought that wasn’t the way God imagined people should treat one another. Two months later my church organized a one-week kids camp in Slavonski Brod, and I went with them. A few of us were staying in an apartment of one missionary which I personally didn’t know. As we started talking she told me that there were people who were working with Roma, and sometimes she would help them, and that week they had a preschool program in the village. I asked her if I can come and see what are they doing, and she told me that she would introduce me to the person who started this ministry – Andy. He told me who the Roma people were and the way that he was serving there with his wife Lim, Sergej and Željka. The first time I entered the village it was like I stepped into an unknown world, a world of a people that longs for love and acceptance. The love on that appeared in me that day and only grew was, I’m convinced, something that doesn’t come from people, but only from God. That day I received an answer from God. An answer to prayer that came just at the right time, not late nor early.

The team that was working in Slavonski Brod also traveled during the Summer to do festivals in Capraške Poljane. That was three years ago. As time went on, I got the chance to meet Roma culture, talk to people, kids, and share the Gospel. I saw kids that are willing to accept the love that we are giving to them, I saw adults saying sorry for not having coffee to offer us and adults who were offering their last spoon of it. By that time, it was so clear that God wanted me in Sisak, in a Roma village separated from the city, a place where most people don’t want to go, where people don’t feel comfortable. It became so clear that God was sending me to people that He loved so much and for whom he gave His only Son. Roma people in Capraške Poljane need to hear the Gospel. In the meantime, I got a chance to spend 6 months in Ireland. And I liked it, the people, the culture, life, the church. I liked it a lot, except I knew I needed to go back to Croatia. Sometimes in life we go where we feel most comfortable, places that we choose for personal reasons, but often those are not places where God wants us, He is calling us to go one step more. God didn’t give me peace in Ireland, and now I can see far greater things were waiting for me here. All that has happened over the past three years are miracles for me. It’s a miracle the was God opens hearts, answers prayers, brings people, the way He does things more than we could imagine, directs plans for His kingdom.

The camp was held during two days, and the night in-between, (8th and 9th of August) in the Baptist Church of Slavonski Brod. We joined our forces with the church from Darda, which brought their youth. We mostly invited the youth that we know well and with which attended youth clubs that we have had for some time now. Out of 40 invited in total, 30 of them came in the end. We also had 12 leaders who did an excellent job at taking care of our excited and not-so-calm campers and showing them love and grace.

We had 4 main meetings, during which we sang worship songs, had a short skit tied to the message, a teaching that explained what the Word of God says on that subject, and, in the end, we split into groups where we talked about the skit and the teaching to encourage the youth to think deeper on the subject.

The four subjects we studied were:

We have to learn about God to approach Him correctly

How can we learn about God and what is He like?

Sin separates us from God

We have to be forgiven and we have to approach God through Jesus

Through all of this, we wanted to explain the Gospel to our campers: that God is good and holy, that we are all sinners, and that we need salvation, which is found only in the Lord Jesus. Our hope and prayer is that all of our campers have thought about all of this. We would like that all of them come to the understanding of truth and believe the Gospel. Pray that they continue to think about this camp, not just as a good time they spent here and all the good stuff they did, but about what we (hopefully) have taught them.

But the Lord gave us the strength to survive the camp.

This was a special experience for our campers because the kids don’t leave the Roma village often. We were glad to see how connected they were to each other, even though our youth slept somewhere else just one night.

The New Testament portion of RCF’s Unified Curriculum was completed and taught to about 80 people!

The Unified Curriculum teaches the Bible across three generational tracks (child, teen/tween, and adult), primarily using an evangelistic, historical narrative approach that also stresses carefully chosen theological concepts.

Years of experience teaching the Bible in a Roma context was used to tailor the curriculum to engage the learner and to be easily understandable.

Storyboard from our children’s curriculum.

With an objective of teaching through the Bible narrative in about two years, 13 key New Testament stories were selected, with a similar number being expected for the upcoming Old Testament curriculum. Repetition and review are stressed, with review lessons scattered throughout the curriculum.

These key stories were woven together to provide a strong sense of cohesion and literary movement. A distinctive is the avoidance of relying on “loaded” theological terms, instead opting to explain the concepts using easily digestible language. Where beneficial, theological words are introduced and defined in the story.

The Unified Curriculum is designed to be used concurrently across three generations within a single Roma community (child, teen/tween, and adult). The same set of Bible stories are used for all ages, while the concepts and depth are adjusted for each age range.

In the case of RCF’s work in Slavonski Brod, Croatia, the curriculum was used to teach the redemptive story of the New Testament through our Klema Bible Clubs to children and tween/teens while at the same time using it for our family home Bible studies. It was such a joy to experience around 80 people from three generations simultaneously learning about God’s love for this world through the Bible narrative!

Next we will begin development of the Old Testament curriculum. Our desire is to reach a level of quality and completeness that allows us to use and distribute the Unified Curriculum in bringing the Biblical message of God’s love and salvation to many Roma communities.

Please pray for the Roma Christian Fellowship and its workers as we work towards this goal!

That’s exactly what happened last week. A group from Romania, three sisters and seven brothers, came to Croatia to proclaim the Gospel to Roma people door to door. The reason why many Roma from Croatia can understand the Romanian language is that their ancestors once lived in Romania.

The team from Romania spent ten days in Croatia. Our RCF team spent five full days with them. Our role was more of the host; we took care where will they sleep and what will they eat. But we also visited, together with this team, some Roma villages where we were before and we also discovered a few new ones.

We welcomed the Romanian team in the Sisak area. There we visited three different Roma villages. One of those villages was ‘Capraške poljane’ where we had the First Klema Carnival for kids earlier this summer. It was nice to see the kids! When the kids figured out that we were in the village, they joyfully ran towards us with open arms to hug us. In the whole short time that we spent with them, they were asking us where is the rest of the team that they met this summer and when we will they come again. We can’t wait to see these kids again.

On the way back to Slavonski Brod, we stopped at the Roma village in Kutina. Our RCF team talked to a few mothers and kids that were waiting for the school bus. Some of the kids were very shy and didn’t want to talk with us because they don’t know us. We are hoping that one day we will be able to do a Klema Carnival in this village and bless them.

On Saturday, the team from Romania spent all day in our village in Slavonski Brod. During the day they visited homes. And in the evening they had an outreach at the big field. A few new people came with whom we didn’t have any previous contact and they have shown interest that we visit them in the future and have a bible study with them. Because of this, our RCF team is delighted and encouraged.

On Sunday, after the morning service in the local church where the team from Romania served with song and a sermon, our RCF team went into Bosnia and Herzegovina with part of their team to a place near Bjeljina where we visited a Roma village.

Normally when you enter a Roma village, first what you would see are stray dogs, a lot of compacted houses, kids that are playing carefreely … but this village was something totally different. Huge, huge houses, far away from each other, no kids, no dogs. The brother from Romania went to this village last year and this time he tried to find the man that he met last year. We found the man’s brothers that kindly hosted us. Even though he was very hospitable, he was not open to God’s Word. We found out that this village has about 1000 Roma, but the majority of them live and work in other countries. They just come here during the summer. An interesting thing was that this man claimed that his nationality is Romanian, not Roma. He even called himself ‘Rudari’, which we believe is the same as ‘Ludari”, and that is the same group of Roma that is living at Slavonski Brod.

The team from Romania shared with us that they are surprised that the Roma are living separately from Croats. That they have their street in the village or their separate village. In Romania, the Roma are living among the Romanians. They were also sad that Christians are not going to most of these villages and are not working with the Roma who are interested in God’s Word.

One of the sisters from Romania noticed that many Roma kids hardly understand their Romanian language, while the older population understand them more. Maybe in the future, they will not have the opportunity to come like this and evangelize in the Romanian language because no one will understand them anymore.

We are very thankful to the Lord for Romanian team that boldly and tirelessly worked among the Roma.

We are praying that the Lord in the future would raise up committed workers for his Kingdom who are going to proclaim his Gospel to the Roma.

Christmas is always a very busy time for RCF, rich with opportunity for ministry in word and deed. The story of the divine Son of God taking on flesh and entering a broken world in order to bring the Kingdom of God and save its people resonates well with the Roma. We rarely have any trouble convincing them that the world is broken and in need of a savior and to share God’s truth, full of love and grace, at this time is pure joy and privilege.

Christmas is also a time for giving. For many Roma children, a simple gift consisting of a handful of candy, a few small school supplies, and an inexpensive toy brings great joy. The major Christmas “shoe box” ministries no longer consider Croatia a needy country so they no longer provide gifts. Of course, the Roma communities are very different from Croatian communities and the need is great. That is why each year RCF funds and packs our own gifts. In reality, it is much more cost effective to purchase contents and pack the gifts locally than have them shipped from abroad. Also, we are able to customize the contents to very specific needs and wants.

The giving nature of Christmas also brings into focus greater physical needs. Many Roma families we minister to live in “hand-to-mouth” poverty and the cold weather brings the major expense of firewood for heating. This expense then cuts into their food budget.

This year, RCF ministered to three Roma villages (Slavonski Brod, Capraške Poljane, and Palanjek) sharing the Gospel-centered, Christmas story with over 200 youth and adults. In Slavonski Brod, our tweens had a Christmas program, complete with a locally written, produced, and acted Christmas play! We also had special Mladice Club Christmas parties and Christmas-themed family home visits, sharing a simple meal, the Christmas story, and a few songs. In the Sisak area (Capraške Poljane and Palanjek) we focused on home-based, children’s Christmas parties and evangelistic home visits.

We wish to thank those that were a great help this year! Specifically, the Bjerk family, Simoen, Violetta, Vedrana, Janko, Johanna, and Jonathan. It is always such a joy to join together with the wider body of Christ while working for God’s Kingdom!

Please keep reading for some Christmas ministry observations from the RCF Sava team!

“The Chinese… the Chinese!!!” the children shouted in excitement as they ran inside the house to tell their parents that we were at their door. Although I was the only Chinese among the three of us, at that moment we were all “Chinese”. We smiled to one another as it was quite a common event for our team, or whoever is with us, to be labelled as “Chinese”. On this occasion it was a sign for us that these children remember us and were excited to see us. After we finished talking with their dad, one of their neighbors’ children saw us leaving. She called out my name and ran to give me a big sweet hug. I am always amazed by the children’s memories and how they remember our names. Sadly, I remember only a few kids’ names in this village even though we have been visiting this main Sisak village a couple times a year since 2013. Thankfully God knows all these precious children in this village by name and He has good plan for them.

This Christmas we were only able to have two parties for the kids and a few home visitations in this village as we had to change some of our activity plans for the first few days. It was because someone died in the village and according to their custom that there should not be any music in the village. Because of that we went to another smaller village where we had never done any ministry before. We are thankful that God gave us an opportunity in finding a home to hold a Christmas party for 20 kids and also a couple of home visitations in that village. The two parties in the main village were good, but a bit crazy as we had more than 70 kids in total. The last club we had to jam pack nearly 50 kids into someone’s sitting room! Although many of our activity plans for Sisak had to change, once again we saw our faithful God’s provision and how He orchestrated all activities in both villages for His glory! It is like what we taught our club slogan to all the kids at the parties “Jesus is the vine, we are the branches.” And without Him we can do nothing!!

Often, Roma kids are not the most well-behaved kids one would encounter. Due to the environment in which they are growing up, they usually don’t have a strong incentive to behave well. When the ministry first started, it was hard to not have chaos in the clubs. But, slowly, with a lot of patience, progress was made.

While we had Christmas clubs this Christmas season, I was surprised at how well the kids and teens have been behaving overall (most of the time), both in our Roma village in Slavonski Brod and in the Roma villages in Sisak. It is nice to see that, while we are sharing the Gospel with them and saturating them in biblical truth and love, we are also teaching them to share, be patient and be nicer, thus impacting their lives immensely, day by day.

It is a great challenge to share what is the real meaning of Christmas with the kids and even with the parents while Christmas is becoming more and more just a gathered family, food, drinks, and gifts. The story of Jesus’ birth sounds more like a fairy tale than a real story, as one lady has said at a Christmas home visit. Because of that, I am praying that Jesus becomes real in the life of those kids and people to whom we bring the Gospel.

During our Christmas ministry, we visited a young lady in one of the Roma villages. She shared a lot about her life. Even though there are a lot of details of her life that made me sad, I was shocked when she said that she gave birth to three boys and she wanted to have a girl and because of that she aborted several times. She talked about the abortus as if it were something completely normal. That reminded me of one Roma pastor who shared a story how he didn’t know that stealing is sin before he met Jesus because he grew up in an area where they respected you if you were a good thief. I am praying for this young lady and hoping to see her again when we come next time.

When we join other Christian workers for our village-wide ministry, I usually take a role of either managing the audio and video technology, driving, or patrolling the village keeping an eye on everything. As a consequence, I often do not get to do “direct ministry.” However, this year, in Capraške Poljane, I was able to join an evangelistic home visit.

As it turned out, last Christmas, as I sat in my car overseeing all of the workers, this family had invited me into their home for coffee. Having a responsibility to be available to the visiting US mission team, I politely declined. As a consolation, they sent a hot cup of coffee out for me to drink in the car.

This year, they reminded me of what had happened last year, and confessed that they were a bit upset with me for not coming inside. They also confessed, that for some time they were unhappy that we were doing so much ministry in Slavonski Brod and so little in their village, which is nearly 1.5 hours away.

These kinds of misunderstanding are common and easy to smooth over. But, they always remind me of how great the need is for ministry and how open the doors are to the Roma.

This family was one of the poorest I had ever visited. In their late 50’s they had 13 children and their home was bare and infested with roaches. Yet, they were delightfully warm and open people, their children bright and engaging, some speaking English unusually well.

When I experience such situations, my faith is both tested and encouraged. Can God really help people in such situations? Can the Good News be transformative in their life? As they seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness will God provide for them as He provides for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field? God’s Spirit inside me answers with a resounding, “Yes!”

I love the picture above, of the rainbow over Capraške Poljane. Over the years, God has used rainbows many times as a sign of His love and promise. God loves the Roma people! May He raise up what is needed to transform lives and communities!

We were very thankful to the Sisak Betel Baptist church for letting us use their space all week!

Why we did go to Sisak, Capraške Poljane?

As we served in Slavonski Brod many saw our program and were amazed. One time during our program there were some people from Sisak and they invited us to come to their village in Capraške Poljane, outside of Sisak. The Roma villages of Slavonski Brod and Capraške Poljane are sister villages, with many marriages between them. We went to Sisak for the first time in 2013. Since then, we have visited this village every year to bring the Good News about Jesus Christ.

Last summer we had a visit from a team from the US, brought by our coworkers from Budapest. We spent a few days serving together in Slavonski Brod, then we also spent a few days serving in Sisak. Just two months after their visit, their leader sent an e-mail that he wanted his church to come back to Sisak and that their church will pray for this village. God opened the door and 8 people from Master’s Community Church in Kansas City came this summer to be living instruments of grace for our Lord.

A few weeks ago, one mother told us that it would be good if we could organize a preschool program that we had two years ago because that program helped her child a lot.

We were encouraged by those words and from the 24th to the 26th of August we organized a preschool program for kids who are about to go in the 1st grade.

Every day, we started the preschool program with a prayer and a song: ‘If I were a colorful butterfly’. We taught kids this song to remind them that we need to be thankful to the Lord for creating us as we are. Kids really loved the song!

Every day we learned one letter. So in three days, we learned letters, L, V, R. We showed the kids objects that starting with those letters, kids had a task to write a letter on the whiteboard, to create those letters from playdough and kids practiced to write the letter in their notebooks.

Every day at break time we ate something that is connected with the letter that we were learning. watermelon (L as lubenica), vanilla ice-cream (V as vanilla), tomato (R as rajčica) sandwich with tomato.

Then we practiced numbers. A majority of the kids knew how to count to ten, but they did not recognize the numbers. We tried to teach them what the numbers look like. For those kids that already knew the numbers, we used Legos to practice counting.

At the end of the program, we had a craft and we tried to give them a simple task where they could color, glue, cut and all that they will need to do in school in the future.

On the last day, at the end of the program we gave to each child a diploma and a gift, and we gave them a school bag and sweets. They were so happy!

The kids that came to this preschool program were babies when we started our ministry in the village. They were so young that they would sit in their moms’ laps and watch the kid’s Bible club from a distance. Now they are growing up, but still so small. Now they are entering a new period of life. We are rejoicing with them and praying for them!

Thank you to all of you for praying for us during this program.

Thank you to the local Baptist church to allows us to use their building for this program.

Jennifer Coll, we are waiting for you next year! ;)
